I have to say, I like to think of myself as "a fairly in shape guy" so when I was invited to come in to Barry’s Boot-camp for a complimentary workout at their New NYC location I looked forward to the challenge.
Barry’s Boot-Camp offers a unique type of high intensity workout that is designed to keep your heart rate up an shock your body into optimal shape. The program consists of intervals on the treadmill followed by floor exercises with free weights and other equipment. I reported to camp at 3:30 pm on a sunny Saturday afternoon, downed an energy drink at the on-premise “Fuel Bar” and got myself psyched up for a great physical challenge or… quite possibly impending torture.
Leading up to my day at boot camp I had taken a rare couple weeks off from training, so I could only hope my pre-workout energy drink would sustain me through what would prove to be a vigorous workout. The class began promptly at 4:00 pm with an introduction by Todd who would be our instructor for the next hour. He took us through a vigorous warm up and then jumped right into the core program. By halfway through the workout I was fading fast and no longer thinking of myself as “a fairly in shape guy.” By the end of the hour I was down on one knee, winded and in a pool of sweat.
Despite my bruised ego, I had a great workout and would recommend Barry’s Boot-Camp to anyone that's considering getting into “serious shape”. You can schedule classes that target specific parts of your body or take a class that touches on everything, “the full body workout”. They will break up the hour doing it differently each time.
Todd also explained how your experience can be different for the same class due the variety of instructors and how they choose to apply the workout.
The New York studio is their largest studio and features full locker rooms with showers. They offer Malin + Goetz beauty products and have a “Fuel Bar” offering protein shakes. There are 5 other locations in California, and another in Norway. With any luck they may eventually open a location near you.
