Plunge Bar & Lounge at The Gansevoort Hotel

Fifteen floors above the Hotel Gansevoort lobby is one of the hippest of hangouts. The bar area is glass enclosed in the winter and rainy days but open air in the warmer months on dry days. If you don't mind wall to wall crowds check it out on the weekend. Otherwise, I recommend a weeknight visit around sunset. Enjoy the roof garden but don't plan on using the hotel pool (which inspires the name "Plunge"), unless you’re a registered guest at the Gansevoort. A smart casual dress code is enforced.
The View: A 360 degree view lets you take in the whole city though the best views here are of lower Manhattan to the south and the NJ skyline across the nearby Hudson River.
The Menu: $14 is the starting price for basic cocktails. American and Japanese fare is available.

The plushest patio furniture I have ever seen awaits you after a day of being out and about in Soho.
The View: Midtown and lower Manhattan skylines are always on display.
The Menu: Fresh fruit from far off lands are a feature of the cocktails which run from $10-$14. Thai hors d'oeuvres are available to spice up your evening here.

Anyone who wasn't born in Chicago knows the truth: if you want the best pizza you'll find it in New York. And it's not just about Ray's, Famous Ray's, Original Ray's or Original Famous Ray's Pizza. The real connoisseur won't send you to Little Italy either. Spectacular slices abound, especially in the West Village.
Don't be fooled by size. The biggest slices I have sampled usually have what I can only call the greasy hot dog flavor. Trust me on some of my personal prize pizza pleasures. Each of these pizzerias pondered presents its own unique version of this staple food in the city that never sleeps.

John's Pizza
278 Bleeker Street(between Jones and Morton Streets)
New York, NY 10014
Neighborhood: West Village

This is not the first of the "Ray's Pizzas" That is actually on Spring Street in SoHo. However this is definitely the best. Don't expect to get too comfortable as it's a mostly stand up operation. My choice here is always the Sicilian slice. It is oozing with cheese and often has an almost toasty crust.
Sal & Carmine's
2671 Broadway(between 101st St & 102nd St)
New York, NY 10025
Neighborhood: Upper West Side
(212) 663-7651
This institution has been serving Upper West-siders since at least the 1950's. Expect classic New York attitude from this neighborhood hole in the wall spot. Sit down space is limited. The crust has good texture and the slice is well seasoned. Don't plan on putting on extra Parmesan cheese as none is available.
Grimaldi's
19 Old Fulton StBrooklyn, NY 11201
Grimaldi's specialty is its coal fueled brick oven, a style it boasts using since 1905. It's practically just under the Brooklyn bridge so it's a great place for a slice before a stroll on the Brooklyn promenade or after a walk across the bridge from lower Manhattan. Like other great NY pizza preparers, Grimladi's has fanned out with branches in Queens, Long Island, Hoboken and even the southwestern United States. But make no mistakes; this is the original.
Searching the city for The 5 Best Burgers was hazardous to my health. Nevertheless I am proud to present my personal picks even as I start my new personal training regimen to lose the pounds I put on. It was worth it all to bring you the best bad-ass beef New York offers.
Shake Shack
Expect a wait of at least an hour as people line up for this fresh burger sold off a street stand. Meat is bought and hand-formed into burgers daily. Fresh deep green lettuce and thick slices of tomato atop your melted cheese keep the crispy edge on this flavorful find.
Beer, wine, hot dogs, custard and milk shakes are also available here for your dining pleasure in the park.

Lure Fishbar
Yeah, yeah but don't be fooled by the name. While seafood and sushi make up the whale's share of the menu, you can dig your teeth into a fine $15 burger. And here's the real beauty of it. Are you taking a woman out who wants some sushi? She can have it here while you sink your teeth into a juicy hamburger with fries.

Neighborhood: SoHo
Pop Burger
Prices on your burger here will vary from under $10 to $15 depending on if you order at the counter, have a sit down lunch or come for dinner. This is the original Pop Burger of the two locations in the city. Sit down is nice as the atmosphere can almost be described as elegant as far as burger joints go. The menu includes salads so a vegetarian buddy or date can find friendly fare. Several bottle beers, draughts and specialty cocktails are also on the menu.

The Spotted Pig
What's in a name anyway? Just about anything BUT pork is on the menu here. There's octopus, rabbit and duck but not even a slice of bacon that I can find. But as for the burger at hand, new possibilities are provoked by ingenious innovation as Roquefort cheese tops this fresh chargrilled beefy bad boy. Don't knock it 'til you check out the terrific tangy taste. This place is open for dinner until 2 AM.
Address: 314 W. 11th Street (at Greenwich St.) New York, NY 10014

Rare Bar & Grill
One of the only reasons I go to Murray Hill is to get me a piece of this action! The setting is tavern style though it's located in the luxury Affinia Shelburne Hotel. The burger plate was $21 when I last went but man it is worth it. The Grade A chuck beef burger is topped with real cheddar, shallot mushrooms and bacon. If you don't eat bacon this burger will give you the reason to start. Did I mention the meat is flambeed in whiskey? Even without the toppings this is a winner.
A second location is in Chelsea. Both have rooftop patios to take in the skyline when weather permits. Closing time is 11 PM most nights but this joint is open 'til midnight on Thursday-Saturday.
Address:303 Lexington Avenue (at 37th Street) New York, NY 10016(212) 481-1999
