Amsterdam's Smokin' Nights

When it comes to a night (or a day) out on the town in Amsterdam one thing (well maybe two things) come to mind. (We'll save the other thing for another article.) Rolling some nice smoke in a good coffee coffee shop.

Even with state after state in the U.S. legalizing medicinal marijuana many good tax paying citizens still can’t get a prescription. Until the U.S truly decriminalizes the use of the good herb there’s still no place like Amsterdam to get your smoke on.

If you’re on the way to this Amsterdam for the first time and want to check out some of the goods don't go  looking for a bar or a pub or a café or any other place for that matter. The place you want to go is one of the many "Coffee Shops" around the city.  No this is not Starbucks my friends. Although, truth be told they do have some great coffee in many of these fine establishments as well.

When you finally get to a spot, try not to be overwhelmed by the wide variety you may find on a menu and don't  go by name alone.  Ask how strong the weed is and take your time. Sample a little at a time so you can check out a variety of flavors.  Remember you can always get more later. For God sake you're in Amsterdam.

Everybody has their favorite cool out spots in this one of a kind city. Having said that,  I’ll leave you with two of my favorite historic coffee shops of the oh-so many worth visiting.

The Bulldog

The Bulldog Coffee Shop is said to be the oldest.  It opened in 1975.  There is a bar upstairs and the coffee shop downstairs.  It now runs a hotel as well and is located smack in the middle of the red light district where more than just the weed is legal.  Why would you not come here?  It’s open from 8 AM until 1 AM.

Address: Oudezijds Voorburgwal 90

De Rokerij

This place is Indian themed and has some seriously hot waitresses.  The original location has been here since 1996.  It is dimly lit with Hindu and Nepali art décor.  A mix of music keeps the atmosphere chill for all visitors just maxin’ and relaxin’ with an eastern vibe.  The doors open at 9 AM and close at 1 AM.

Address: Near Leidseplein

After you’re smoked out in the early evening there are quite a few really good West African restaurants run by immigrant entrepreneurs where you can satisfy your heavy case of the munchies.  Then you’ll be ready for the next round which can be planned to end at the Bulldog or perhaps elsewhere in the Red Light District where a number of night clubs are packed with partiers.
