Leila Lopes, Miss Angola, was crowned Miss Universe during the 60th anniversary of the competition. Lopes is the fourth black woman to receive the honor in the pageant’s history, and only the second black African woman to do so, and the first Angolan ever. The other two were from Trinidad & Tobago.
Lopes, 25, wowed the audience and judges with not only her stunning physical beauty, but also the thoughtful answers she provided for questions. When asked what physical trait she would change if she could, Lopes responded: “Thank God I’m very satisfied with the way God created me and I wouldn’t change a thing. I consider myself a woman endowed with inner beauty. I have acquired many wonderful principles from my family and I intend to follow these for the rest of my life.”
Ms. Lopes’ platform will focus on HIV advocacy around the world as well as poverty and anti-war initiatives.
