1) Check systems that can be susceptible to cold before the mercury starts falling. Belts, hoses, batteries and other basic systems on your car can be impacted by prolonged cold or even one hard freeze. For instance, your car battery can lose some of its starting power after a freeze, and cold weather can make belts and hoses become brittle and break more easily. If any of these items are already old, that freeze may push them over the edge and leave you stranded. If your car isn’t on a regular maintenance plan, find a good mechanic you trust to give these systems a once over before winter rolls in.
