Chris Washington's NY

His name is The Legendary Chris Washington. He's currently a DJ on 107.5FM WBLS in New York City.  After graduating from Cardinal Hayes High School, this Bronx born and raised master mixer headed to Washington, DC where he attended Howard University (graduated with BA – Broadcast Journalism in 1992). In his former life Washington served as the Manager for Urban College Marketing for Atlantic Records, Director of Promotion for VP Records and Marketing Consultant to Capitol Records. He believes his true area of expertise is music and college marketing. He's had a major impact in the music industry and and is most proud of the 150+ college reps and interns that he's discovered, developed and trained over the last 15 years.

LIQUID got a chance to catch up with The Legendary and he let us know what makes him tick and what he loves about The Big Apple. Here's what he told us...

What sets you apart from the rest in your industry?

One of the things that sets me apart is my actual thinking when it comes to music and DJing. I don’t think like anyone else, therefore I don’t play like anyone else.  I think the Art & Craft of DJing is a thinking DJs game.  Always planning the next step for your listeners.

What is your passion?

My passion is Sports, Music and Howard University. While I like other things, that's what REALLY gets my juices flowing.

What do you like best about living in your city, and why?

I like the options that New York City has to offer at all times. It is truly the city that never sleeps and while I might sleep it’s good to know that the options are stlill there Monday thru Sunday. I also like the fact that I play baseball and I have an over abundace of choices of sports leagues to play in..I love that.

What are a few of your favorite restaurants, and why?

Spoonbread (I just love Norma Jean) she is my official go to caterer and I love the Soul Food. Another favorite is Rack and Soul, the chef there use to cater our lunches at Atlantic Records. Let me tell you, that man knows how to fry some chicken and his BBQ sauce is delish!  For my sweet tooth it's gotta be Make My Cake, she is my baker and I’ve been getting my cakes from her since she was baking out of her apartment. When I need my Red Velvet Cake it’s the only place on my list. At the end of the day I'm a cheeseburger type of guy, so I've gotta have Jackson Hole on the list. Their burgers are BIG and fricken awesome.

Where is your favorite area/place to shop, and why?

I’m NOT much of a shopper but it would have to be Woodbury Commons.. Two reasons why..Outlet Stores and Niketown.. enough said.

Where are some of the best places to people watch in NYC?

Rockefeller Center. OMG, nothing beats seeing the beautiful people there. Close second..Union Square, it’s just a bizarre mix of an eclectic cast of characters.

What places would you consider to be a “best kept secret” in your city?

WAVE HILL…by far one of the cities gems in the Bronx over looking the Hudson River.  It’s absolutely one of my favorite places ever.

Where is your favorite getaway?

Martha’s Vineyard. Hands down my favorite place to be other than New York City. It’s just a surreal environment with no pretence. l love the escape from the city, it ‘s my spot, followed by Washington, DC. My school is there, my people are there so I always enjoy going home. The third is my sleeper pick unless you really know me. The Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, NY. Let me tell you this old style Victorian hotel that sits in the Mountains of New York over looking the lake is literally one of the best places ever.

THE LIQUID FIVE What are your favorite people, places and things in NYC

1. Citi Field - I'm a Mets Fan. And the field has real grass (remember, I love baseball).

2. Grand Central Station

3. A Good party with people who dance like no one is watching Favorite people

4. New York City Street Fairs (there's nothing like them anywhere).

5. The streets on New York. That's an experience in itself.

** The Twin Towers - I know they're gone but they were always my favorite landmark. I do a lot of traveling out of town and whenever I saw the Towers coming up in the distance as I returned, I knew I was home. That has since been replaced by the Empire State Building. Favorite Things Sporting Events (see NY Mets or NJ Jets), City Street Fairs (Nothing like them anywhere).

** My mom, Dad, grandpa and wife are all New Yorkers so they take the top slot.. the fitth slot I’ll reserve for all the DJs that I love to listen too and that make me dance (they know who they are)

That's My New York!

Mad46

Offering views of midtown Manhattan, the sky-high lounge serves as an unpretentious after-work hideaway and is accessible to visitors through an exclusive elevator located on the 46th Street entrance at the back of the hotel.  A hidden oasis under the Manhattan skyline, mad46 Rooftop Lounge is THE place to mix and mingle with midtown's hottest after work crowd.

Worried about the occasional summer shower? They’ve got you covered with two inside lounges called UPTOWN and DOWNTOWN (available for private events).

Plunge Bar & Lounge at The Gansevoort Hotel

Fifteen floors above the Hotel Gansevoort lobby is one of the hippest of hangouts.  The bar area is glass enclosed in the winter and rainy days but open air in the warmer months on dry days.  If you don't mind wall to wall crowds check it out on the weekend.  Otherwise, I recommend a weeknight visit around sunset.  Enjoy the roof garden but don't plan on using the hotel pool (which inspires the name "Plunge"), unless you’re a registered guest at the Gansevoort.  A smart casual dress code is enforced.

The View: A 360 degree view lets you take in the whole city though the best views here are of lower Manhattan to the south and the NJ skyline across the nearby Hudson River.

The Menu: $14 is the starting price for basic cocktails. American and Japanese fare is available.

The Address: 18 Ninth Avenue, at 13th St.; 877-426-7386; open daily from 5PM to 11PM on weekdays.

The Hours: Closing is 1AM on Friday-Sunday.  Plunge opens at 11 AM on Saturday and Sunday.

The Neighborhood: Meatpacking District

The View: Midtown and lower Manhattan skylines are always on display.

The Menu: Fresh fruit from far off lands are a feature of the cocktails which run from $10-$14. Thai hors d'oeuvres are available to spice up your evening here.

Hudson Sky Terrace

Located on the 15th floor of the New York Hudson Hotel, this is a place to kick back and relax.  If you're lucky you can get hammock space in the roof garden.  Light fare is available as well as drinks.  The luxurious views of the city and the Hudson River from the Sky Terrace are accessible to guests only.  If you get tired of relaxing you can always go downstairs to the Library Grill where a more raucous environment is usually waiting.  The mod/eclectic Hudson Bar is also in the building.

The View: Ninth Avenue rolling downtown and the Hudson River and Jersey City skyline.

The Menu: Martinis, Sangria and drinks mixed with fruit juice are the specialty here.

The Address: 356 W. 58th Street (between Eighth and Ninth Avenues); 212-554-6317;

High Bar

Taking the name from the former historic celebrity haunt above the Gramercy Hotel, this 15th floor midtown hot spot is one of the latest Brier Group-run restaurants and bars.  High Bar’s two story space includes the sprawling outdoor terrace with love seats and pillowed day beds implying just about anything goes.  With two DJ booths and room for as many as 300 for private events, The High bar is a major roof top destination.

The View: Surrounding mid-town Manhattan.  It may not be the best of views but the scene is well worth the visit.

The Menu: A wide range of cocktails and bottles are available.  Sandwiches and burgers (including veggie) are also served.

5 Best Slices in NYC

Anyone who wasn't born in Chicago knows the truth: if you want the best pizza you'll find it in New York.  And it's not just about Ray's, Famous Ray's, Original Ray's or Original Famous Ray's Pizza. The real connoisseur won't send you to Little Italy either.  Spectacular slices abound, especially in the West Village.

Don't be fooled by size.  The biggest slices I have sampled usually have what I can only call the greasy hot dog flavor.  Trust me on some of my personal prize pizza pleasures.  Each of these pizzerias pondered presents its own unique version of this staple food in the city that never sleeps.

Joe's Pizza

7 Carmine Street
(between 6th Avenue & Bleeker Street)
Manhattan, NY 10014
Neighborhood: West Village

(212) 255-3946

www.joespizza.com/page7.html

Joe has been spinning pies here since 1975.  His sought after slice is also available on King's Highway in Brooklyn and even in Los Angeles.  This is the original spot however.  Joe goes easy on the cheese to let his sweet tomato sauce tantalize your tongue's taste.  Traditional toppings are available as well as broccoli which has become generally acceptable to to New York pizza since late 1980's.  No pineapple at this traditional pizza joint.

John's Pizza

278 Bleeker Street
(between Jones and Morton Streets)
New York, NY 10014
Neighborhood: West Village

(212) 924-4466

www.johnspizzerianyc.com

John's is famous for it's brick oven cooking.  It's also one of the few sit down pizza joints in the Village.  Like Joe's John's had additional locations.  Two are in mid-town Manhattan and one is across the Hudson in Jersey City.  Of course I recommend the original.  However if you want to hold a business or social event check out the elegant 260 West 44th Street location.

Famous Ray's
465 6th Avenue
(between 11th and 12th Streets)
New York, NY 10011
Neighborhood: West Village

(212) 243-2253

FamousRay's

This is not the first of the "Ray's Pizzas"  That is actually on Spring Street in SoHo.  However this is definitely the best.  Don't expect to get too comfortable as it's a mostly stand up operation.  My choice here is always the Sicilian slice.  It is oozing with cheese and often has an almost toasty crust.

Sal & Carmine's

2671 Broadway
(between 101st St & 102nd St)
New York, NY 10025
Neighborhood: Upper West Side

(212) 663-7651

Sal&Carmine's

This institution has been serving Upper West-siders since at least the 1950's.  Expect classic New York attitude from this neighborhood hole in the wall spot.  Sit down space is limited.  The crust has good texture and the slice is well seasoned.  Don't plan on putting on extra Parmesan cheese as none is available.

Grimaldi's

19 Old Fulton St
Brooklyn, NY 11201
(718) 858-4300

Grimaldi's specialty is its coal fueled brick oven, a style it boasts using since 1905.  It's practically just under the Brooklyn bridge so it's a great place for a slice before a stroll on the Brooklyn promenade or after a walk across the bridge from lower Manhattan.  Like other great NY pizza preparers, Grimladi's has fanned out with branches in Queens, Long Island, Hoboken and even the southwestern United States.  But make no mistakes; this is the original.

5 Best NYC Burgers

Searching the city for The 5 Best Burgers was hazardous to my health.  Nevertheless I am proud to present my personal picks even as I start my new personal training regimen to lose the pounds I put on.  It was worth it all to bring you the best bad-ass beef New York offers.

Shake Shack

Expect a wait of at least an hour as people line up for this fresh burger sold off a street stand.  Meat is bought and hand-formed into burgers daily.  Fresh deep green lettuce and thick slices of tomato atop your melted cheese keep the crispy edge on this flavorful find.

Beer, wine, hot dogs, custard and milk shakes are also available here for your dining pleasure in the park.

Address: Madison Square Park SE corner (at Madison Avenue  & E. 23rd Street) New York, NY 10010

212-889-6600

Neighborhood: Flatiron District

Lure Fishbar

Yeah, yeah but don't be fooled by the name.  While seafood and sushi make up the whale's share of the menu, you can dig your teeth into a fine $15 burger.  And here's the real beauty of it.  Are you taking a woman out who wants some sushi?  She can have it here while you sink your teeth into a juicy hamburger with fries.

Address: 142 Mercer Street (at Prince St.) New York, NY 10012

212-431-7676

Lure Fishbar

Neighborhood: SoHo

Pop Burger

Prices on your burger here will vary from under $10 to $15 depending on if you order at the counter, have a sit down lunch or come for dinner.  This is the original Pop Burger of the two locations in the city.  Sit down is nice as the atmosphere can almost be described as elegant as far as burger joints go.  The menu includes salads so a vegetarian buddy or date can find friendly fare.  Several bottle beers, draughts and specialty cocktails are also on the menu.

Address: 14 E 58th St (between 5th Ave & Madison Ave) New York, NY 10022

212-991-6644

Pop Burger

Neighborhood: Midtown East

The Spotted Pig

What's in a name anyway? Just about anything BUT pork is on the menu here.  There's octopus, rabbit and duck but not even a slice of bacon that I can find.  But as for the burger at hand, new possibilities are provoked by ingenious innovation as Roquefort cheese tops this fresh chargrilled beefy bad boy.  Don't knock it 'til you check out the terrific tangy taste.  This place is open for dinner until 2 AM.

Address: 314 W. 11th Street (at Greenwich St.) New York, NY 10014

(212) 620-0393

The Spotted Pig

Neighborhood: West Village

Rare Bar & Grill

One of the only reasons I go to Murray Hill is to get me a piece of this action! The setting is tavern style though it's located in the luxury Affinia Shelburne Hotel.  The burger plate was $21 when I last went but man it is worth it.  The Grade A chuck beef burger is topped with real cheddar, shallot mushrooms and bacon.  If you don't eat bacon this burger will give you the reason to start.  Did I mention the meat is flambeed in whiskey?  Even without the toppings this is a winner.

A second location is in Chelsea.  Both have rooftop patios to take in the skyline when weather permits.  Closing time is 11 PM most nights but this joint is open 'til midnight on Thursday-Saturday.

Address:303 Lexington Avenue (at 37th Street) New York, NY 10016
